Interesting.  But there is some positive findings for interventions that focus on controlled attention, a brain function important for good working memory.

Brain training: Effective fact or a just a fad?

The brain fitness/training field is hot as evidenced by the following three different review articles I discovered in my weekly literature search. I have not yet read them but wanted to pass these along as FYI ASAP.

Research byte: Psychological effects of meditation--a meta-analysis

An interesting research synthesis that helps sort out the positive impact of different types of psychological mediation on different outcomes. I am particularly interested in the support for meditation techniques that emphasis control of attention (e.g., focusing on breathing; a tone; etc.) given the parallels I have written about with regard to the Interactive Metronome neurotechnology.

Daniel Kahneman on the Trap of 'Thinking That We Know' - NYTimes.com

Daniel Kahneman on the Trap of 'Thinking That We Know'

The National Academy of Sciences did a great service to science early this week by holding a conference on "The Science of Science Communication." A centerpiece of the two-day meeting was a lecture titled "Thinking That We Know," delivered by Daniel Kahneman, the extraordinary behavioral scientist who was awarded a Nobel Prize in economics despite never having taken an economics class.

The talk is extraordinary for the clarity (and humor) with which he repeatedly illustrates the powerful ways in which the mind filters and shapes what we call information. He discusses how this relates to the challenge of communicating science in a way that might stick.

Please carve out the time to watch his slide-free, but image-rich, talk. It's a shorthand route to some of the insights described in Kahneman's remarkable book, "Thinking, Fast and Slow" (I'm a third of the way through).

Here's the video of the talk (which is "below the fold" because it's set up to play automatically):

.
As I noted via Twitter during the meeting, this talk and many other engaging presentations at the event illustrate the importance of adding a fresh facet to the popular notion that today's citizens, and particularly students, would do well to improve their capacity for critical thinking:

"Critical thinking has to include assessing one's own thinking."

There's more on the meeting at the Age of Engagement blog of Matthew Nisbet of American University, one of the presenters. And review Twitter traffic using the #Sackler tag set up for the conference.

More on the MindHub and the Brain Clock blog

Through some slight arm twisting by my friends at Interactive Metronome, I agreed to tape a couple of videos were I describe the purpose of the MindHub portal and the importance of the human brain clock, which I write about at the Brain Clock blog. You can access and view the brief videos at a post at the IM-HOME blog. The post also includes two recent interviews I completed with Psychology Today and Careers in Psychology.

Enjoy.

Better thinking via brain clock syncing

FYI from the Time Doc

An interesting post by Amy Vega at the IM-HOME blog today. She summarizes a 2006 article by Stankov et al that suggests that fine tuning the phase synchrony of neural (gamma) oscillations can improve cognitive performance. I find this post interesting as I included this as a possible explanation for brain-clock based brain fitness technology in a keynote presentation I made at an IM conference in 2007. See my slide below. The entire presentation is available for viewing via Slideshare.

Individual variability in speed of information processing: An index of cognitive impairment in multiple sclerosis.

Neuropsychology - Vol 24, Iss 4
Objective: The principal cognitive domain impacted by multiple sclerosis (MS) appears to be information processing speed. Studies have documented mean differences between MS patients and healthy controls on numerous measures of information processing speed, but the present study is one of the first to examine individual variability (i.e., inconsistency) in processing speed. Method: Thirty-nine patients with relapsing-remitting or secondary progressive MS and 32 healthy controls completed a series of reaction time (RT) tests, the Stroop Test, and the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test. In addition to mean differences, appropriate measures of individual variability (i.e., coefficients of variability) were obtained for the tests yielding response times. Results: MS patients performed more poorly on all response time measures, responding more slowly and with greater inconsistency than controls. Logistic regression analyses showed that inconsistency measures contributed independently to the discrimination between groups beyond that resulting from measures of mean processing speed. The so-called "complexity effect" was also demonstrated; greater between-groups differences on both mean RTs and inconsistency generally occurred on tasks placing greater demand on central executive resources. Conclusion: Processing speed in MS patients is characterized by greater individual variability as well as overall declines. This variability should be examined further in relation to neuroimaging indices of MS. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2012 APA, all rights reserved)

Executive functions in girls with ADHD followed prospectively into young adulthood.

Neuropsychology - Vol 24, Iss 4
Objective: We prospectively followed an ethnically and socioeconomically diverse sample of girls with ADHD (n = 140) and a matched comparison group (n = 88) into young adulthood (Mage = 19.6), 10 years after childhood initial assessments, to evaluate neuropsychological functioning. We hypothesized that neuropsychological deficits would persist through young adulthood for those with ADHD, and that those with continuing ADHD symptomatology in young adulthood would show the largest impairments. Method: Neuropsychological measures at follow-up emphasized executive functions (EF) including planning, organization, inhibitory control, sustained attention, working memory, and set shifting. Results: Parallel to findings from childhood and adolescence, the girls with childhood-diagnosed ADHD displayed medium to large deficits in EF relative to comparisons at follow-up, even with statistical control of baseline demographic and comorbidity variables. The addition of IQ as a covariate attenuated differences but several remained significant. Comparisons between the inattentive and combined subtypes of ADHD yielded nonsignificant results with small effect sizes. EF impairments were evident in both participants whose ADHD diagnoses persisted and in those whose ADHD symptoms had remitted to a nondiagnosable level; both subgroups had more EF deficits than those who did not meet criteria for ADHD in either childhood or young adulthood. Conclusions: Those in both the persistent and remitted ADHD groups showed impairments in EF relative to comparisons and generally did not differ from each other. Overall, childhood ADHD in girls portends neuropsychological/EF deficits that persist for at least 10 years. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2012 APA, all rights reserved)
