ADHD as brain-clock based temporal processing disorder - another study
Yet another article, this time based on a sample of children from China, that supports the hypothesis that ADHD may be related to an underlying disorder of the brain clock (temporal processing).

ADHD as a default brain network problem?
Trends in Cognitive Sciences, January 2012, Vol. 16, No. 1
I just skimmed this excellent article which is consistent with the hypothesis that problems with controlled attention (focus) may be responsible for a number of the behavioral symptoms of ADHD....and this is due to the poor ability to suppress the random self-talk of the default brain network. As per the IQs Reading feature, an annotated copy of the article is now available.
Based on my reading and research regarding Interactive Metronome technology, I advanced the position that the efficacy of this technology in improving focus or controlled attention is that it helps to "quiet the busy mind" that is due to the REST (random, episodic, spontaneous thought or thinking) of the default brain network. In simple terms, poor ability to suppress or quiet the default network results in poor controlled attention and focus...and one has a hard time with inhibiting the intrusion of these task-irrelevant thoughts when trying to engage in controlled, deliberate cognitive tasks.
This article reviews research that suggests that ADHD may be a default brain network disorder. The authors state "In 2007, Sonuga-Barke and Castellanos suggested that ADHD could be considered a default network disorder"...and the authors of the current article agree.

Video from Stanford conference on Law & the Developing Brain
Last month the CLB co-hosted a two-day conference on the law and policy of the developing brain throughout the human lifespan. The first day, held at UC Hastings College of Law, focused on legal issues related to brain development from the womb to adulthood. The second day, held at Stanford Law School, addressed issues related to senescence. Video from the Stanford portion of this event is now available via the links below:
- Welcome & Introduction to the Aging Population with Halk Greely (CLB) & Ken Smith, (Stanford Center on Longevity)
- Neuroscience, Aging, and Decision-making, with Sam McClure (Stanford), Barbara Strauch (New York Times) & Rita Ghatak (Stanford)
- Financial Fraud and the Elderly with Doug Shadel (AARP, Seattle) & Stephen Vernon (Gilfix and La Poll Associates LLP)
- The Psychology of Adult Development by Laura Carstensen (Stanford Center on Longevity)
- Predicting Alzheimer Disease — The Science and its Implications with Hank Greely (Stanford), Mike Gilfix (La Poll Associates LLP), Geoffrey Kerchner (Stanford Medical School), Frank Longo (Stanford Medical School)

Neuroscience Research Building (NRB 132)
Recent advances in network science have greatly increased our understanding of many complex networked systems, ranging from transportation networks, to social networks, the internet, ecosystems, and biochemical and gene transcription pathways. Network approaches are also increasingly applied in the context of neuroscience, at several levels of scale from cells to circuits and large-scale systems. A broad range of empirical strategies aim at creating comprehensive maps of the brain's connections, the connectome. Initial results obtained from the first connectome maps of the human brain reveal a number of characteristic topological features, including small-world attributes, modularity and hubs, and a pronounced core and rich-club organization. Dr. Sporns will review how recent network studies have given us new insights into the brain's connection topology, and how these studies provide new insight into the relationship between structure and functional dynamics.

Research Bytes: What is cognitive efficiency--conceptual and methodological models
Cognitive efficiency has become a hot construct in the psychometric measurement of intelligence. However, not much conceptual or methodological foundation work has addressed the issue of "what is CE" and "what methodological model should be used?"
Hoffman and associates have written some interesting conceptual articles that we in the area of intelligence testing may want to review to add some clarity to the measurement and interpretation of our CE measures on IQ batteries. Below are two recent articles.

The Time Doc IM-Home bog posts re: brain-clock based Interactive Metronome
A few years back I made a number of guest blog posts at the Interactive Metronome-HOME (IM-HOME) blog. I find frequently find myself directing people to some of those posts. Thus, I am now provided access to all of those posts via a single link (click here). I drill down deeper into Interactive Metronome as a guest blogger at the IM-Home blog. Now all my IM-related posts can be viewed via one URL. I hope readers check out these posts and become more aware of the exciting neurotechnologies that are emerging based on the concept of temporal processing and the human brain clock.
